Members of the angel fish family bear a sharp spine on the lower posterior corner of the preopercle. The presence of this
spine distinguishes and separates them from their close Butterflyfish Family which do not have this spine present. Genera of
the Angelfish Family:
The miniature sized Centropyge species, which are also referred to as Pygmy or Dwarf Angels. This categtory includes a large
number of some of the best starter Angelfishes that adapt well to aquarium life, are fairly easy to care for and ideal for smaller
20 to 55 gallon tanks.
Medium size Chaetodontoplus and Genicanthus species, as well as a few others in this group. This category includes a fair
number of good starter species, best suited for 70 gallon and larger tanks.
Large size Genera Holacanthus and Pomacanthus species. This category has a considerable number of species that are
good starters, but require a 100 gallon aquarium or larger.
