Live sand is home for all the beneficial sea dwellers
There are many beneficial types of worms and crustaceans found in live sand pulled
from the ocean. These sand dwellers are used by many fish as a natural food
source. The grain size ranges from fine (sugar size) to a medium grade.
Recommended Amount of Live Sand
The recommended amount of Live Sand for an aquarium is 1 to 1-1/2 pounds per
gallon, depending on the desired thickness. For a sand layer of 2 inches, 1-1/2
pounds per gallon will work well. Live Sand will benefit not only reef aquariums, but
also fish-only tanks that incorporate external filtration.
When Do I Add The Live Sand?
Live sand should be added right from the beginning, as it is beneficial in the entire
cycling process of the new aquarium.
Additional Recommended Sand Creatures to Add to your Tank
We recommend incorporating sand-sifting invertebrates such as sand stars, horse
shoe crabs or sea cucumbers and serpent stars and/or brittle stars along with your
fish to aquariums that contain live sand. These animals will maintain the proper
oxygen content in the top layer of the sand, and stir up detritus so that it can be
removed from the aquarium by the mechanical filter.

provide anywhere near the same success as true ocean live
sand. Real, live sand collected from the oceans around the Gulf
